Paper mill production line where pregelatinized tapioca starch is used for surface sizing and coating

Paper & Packaging

Starch for paper mills, specified for the size press, the coater and the wet end

Paper and board mills use tapioca starch to build surface strength, control porosity and hold coating pigments in place. Our pregelatinized grades disperse in cold water, so mills can dose at the size press without a jet cooker, while native and modified grades are supplied for conventional cooked systems.

The challenge

What paper & packaging manufacturers ask us to solve

Inconsistent viscosity between batches

Sizing solids drift, printability changes and the coater has to be re-tuned shift after shift.

Energy cost of cooking starch

Jet cookers and batch cookers add steam load, maintenance and start-up time to the glue kitchen.

Fibre loss and low internal bond

Recycled furnish loses strength, and synthetic strength aids raise cost and complicate effluent.

Our solution

How PREGEL WORLD responds

We match a grade to your machine speed, solids and target Cobb or burst value, then lock the viscosity band into the specification so every container behaves like the last. Pregelatinized grades remove the cooking stage entirely; modified grades give the film flexibility a fast coater needs.

Higher surface strength and reduced linting

Better printability and ink hold-out

No cooking stage with cold-water-soluble grades

Improved internal bond on recycled furnish

Biodegradable alternative to synthetic binders

Questions

Paper & Packaging starch — common questions

Can pregelatinized tapioca starch replace cooked starch at the size press?

Yes. Cold-water-soluble grades hydrate in the make-down tank at ambient temperature and reach working viscosity without a jet cooker, which removes the steam load from the size press circuit.

What viscosity is supplied for paper applications?

Viscosity is set to your target band and verified on a Brabender against the grade's control curve before release, with the result recorded on the certificate of analysis.

Do you supply paper mills outside Vietnam?

Yes. We export in 25kg sacks, 50kg bags and jumbo bags by full container to paper manufacturers across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
